With that said, you all know about my addiction to YouTube videos and today I just happened to come across one about the National Pole Dancing Competition. These women were doing tricks that I couldn't even dream about doing that took incredible strength. Now these women competed just as we do and I now have a great amount of respect for these who participate in it. But since there is such a negative stereotype associated with it can it really be respected? I just wanted to get others opinions because it had me thinking about men participating in it also and it got awkward but that is just me.

Pole Dancing
I have danced pretty much all of my year and that includes about every type of dancing except ballet and tap. I performed at games and competitions to where my school considered our dance team part of the athletic team. Much like cheerleading, which I also did, we got a lot of scrutiny from some of peers saying that we weren't really a sport, but we did as much work and more then many of the sports teams. We even had to go to cross fit with most of the time with the school's JROTC. But because dance was considered so feminine they could not see it being a real sport.

Part of me thinks: "Yeah! Own your sexuality! It takes a physically strong and super confident woman to rock that pole! Yeah!"
ReplyDeleteAnother part: "The only reason we even do this is for guys. We're brainwashed to think that we're doing it for us, but in actuality it's for them."
So I don't know...sorry I'm no help.
I agree with both sides stated above. I am torn between this being seen as a positive or negative thing. I think its great that these women are capturing their sexuality and showing their strength and ability while doing so. But I also question why they are doing what it? If they are doing this for themselves then thats great!! But if its being done as a spectator sport for men, thats not so great.
ReplyDeleteI can't help but think a guys (most guys) comment to this would be "Thats a real womens sport", or something along those lines. And I just do not understand why womens sports should be things that are sexual and show off their bodies more than their abilities!
I agree with all three of you - I think it's incredible that these women have made pole dancing into a sport/competition, yet at the same time, why is it a competition in the first place? For me, I lean more towards the positive - I think that pole dancing has stereotypical been for men and for men only; however, since these women have made it into a sport/competition, I would like to say that they are going beyond the pleasing men aspect of it and doing it for themselves. I don't know, I just find it hard to think about why they would spend all of that time training and working out to build up their strenght if it wasn't something that they wanted to do and to do for themselves.
