I found this picture on Facebook a couple weeks ago by a really good friend of mine who posted this and I did further research on this woman and i was completely disgusted by the inhume treatment she received by European men. See was completely objectified because of her foreign yet "exotic" physical appearance to europeans.
The modern-day pictures show that there is a perpetuation of this accessibility and objectification to the bodies of colored women.
What do you all think?
Wow, that really is appalling! Unfortunately, I've never heard of this women until now, but I think that says something in itself, along with the continuing objectification of the bodies of colored women - this objectification of women is so pervasive, that it's nothing new! After all, why would the story of Sarah Baartman be discussed in History classes and the like when similar things happen everyday to millions of other women? Though I really am intrigued by this women now too so I think I'll do a little research of my own - thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Heather. I have never heard of this woman either but you do see in today's culture that "exotic" women are becoming more attractive due to their physical features. This really shows me where men's fascination with butts comes from or a sense of how far back it goes. Even during this time women were being surveyed and for this women she was being surveyed and acted upon until her death. This is the same way that society displays women in our media today. They are just the dancing girls in the background of music videos there to entertain the men who watch the videos.
