stamping out inequality

Hey all you women out there! You can now die on the front lines of war according to Leon Panetta the Secretary of Defense. He has lifted the 1994 ban on women fighting on the front lines. This is the same guy that denied soldiers to have guns on their person for a speech he was giving them....in a war zone. (The first time that has ever been done.) He was afraid of the troops so he banned their guns while he was on sight. He is a fuckrag of a human. And now the "mothers" can be raped and murdered in war. Yes, they really care for your futures. I hate these pussy ass, fake ass, loser men who would rather give their women up then fight themselves. I hope you get cancer Mr. Panetta......in your yellow belly.

This is a status that someone I know on facebook posted up.  He is into government conspiracies and things like that.  He is also someone who I would describe as a radical moderate.  This is how some people feel and I said some things to shut his mouth on this one, but it is sometimes hard to accept these types of non-egalitarian views after what we have studied.  Nothing bothers me as deeply as injustice, and I would be willing to guess that a grand majority of other people are also bothered by injustice.  The roles of men and women are so highly ingrained into our society that it seems like a given for many people; they don't even stop to ask themselves if what they believe is just.  One thing great about the internet is that it has allowed ideas to be shared around the globe, but it has also increased the speed at which fools are educating people in ignorant views.  My solution?  speak out when you notice these things.

  1. I think that status is not only disturbing because it makes fun of a move toward equality, but does so in such a violent manner. It's one thing to believe women shouldn't be on the front lines (which I disagree with anyway), it's another to violently wish ill upon the person who is making equality happen. This level of violence only comes from fear, if you ask me. Historically, those who are most violent have been those afraid of the strength of the 'little guy'. I'm just reminded of racism and riots and the violence against others that continues to this day based in fear. So, this guy is clearly a coward, and should be let known of his cowardice, if you ask me.

  2. I too had Facebook "friends" comment on this very topic. Not many were as pissed as this guy seems, but almost all were speaking against women fighting on the front lines. They defended women fighting and even dying for our country, but when it came to this subject, they contradicted themselves and said the front lines are no place for a woman. Other views I read spoke out against women fighting in the military altogether. All of their support was based on outdated views on what woman's role is (obviously having babies, cooking, and cleaning). It's frustrating and nauseating to read these opinions, but that's the beauty of free speech I guess.

I would agree that the best thing to do in this situation, is speak your mind as well- shutting them up with the sorts of things we are learning in this class. I have found myself in multiple "arguments" (disagreements? ha) over women's rights, roles, and expectations having been in this class, and find myself raising an eyebrow at the majority of things my male classmates think regarding women. Whether I am able to change their mind or not, at least I am showing them that not all women are willing to fit perfectly into society's little box.

  3. The major difficulty is when you bring up strong points to these people and they recognize your good point and the excellent logic behind it... and then they continue to spout their BS everywhere else. Free speech and electronic media have sped up the amount of information we receive; it has simultaneously increased the amount of false information we can be fed.
