Spring Breakers

So I'm not sure if you all have seen but there is a new movie coming out a week from Friday called "Spring Breakers." The plot: "Four college girls who land in jail after robbing a restaurant in order to fund their spring break vacation find themselves bailed out by a drug and arms dealer who wants them to do some dirty work." It stars James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Selena Gomez, and Rachel Korine.

Anyways, one of the things that I have read about the movie is that they asked the 4 girls to eat "normal" type food (aka- some junk food, whatever they wanted, etc) in order to look a bit heavier than normal for the movie, because they wanted the girls to look like "typical college students, mainly ones who drink, party, etc." Here are a few pictures from the movie:

It might be a bit hard to tell, but if you look closely the girls do have a some stomachs sticking out, and they look they are a more "normal-ish" weight.

My question is: should "normal college girls" like us think that this is a good thing (because these girls are not stick-thin-model looking, but instead look more like a normal weight for girls our age) OR is this offensive (as in "college girls are little fat, so could you 4 put on some more weight in order to resemble them?").

I personally feel that it is a good thing that the movie is trying to represent what normal women's bodies look like, but what do you think?

  1. I agree with you! I think that it is a good thing that they are not using stick thin girls who NO ONE resembles. Although, I do not like the fact that they make them look so grungy and kinda 'trashy' in the second picture. Granted, I am assuming they are with the drug dealer at this point. But it kind of makes me question if their grunginess is paired with the 'imperfection' on purpose. Or in other words: if they had 'perfect' seeming stick thin girls do you still think they would have made them out to be grungy and kinda dirty?

  2. If anything I think it would send more f a message to celebrities out there that think it is so important to be super thin and skeleton like. The director was telling them that they do not look normal. The fact that they actually wanted them to look normal is really great because in most movies they are trying to get them to lose more weight. I think that if more productions in the media followed this then we would not have as many girls starving themselves or becoming best friends with the ends of their toothbrushes and the toilet. In a way it could reshape how we think of skinny.

  3. I think that in any case, all these people in Hollywood want to do is make some money, since they are working on this movie.

What is universal for them is that they want the maximum number of people in the audience.

If what people want to see is something realistic or believable, they will do that to make money.

If what people want to see is something non-realistic, they will do that to make money.

If you like what they are doing, go see the movie.
