Female Refs
This subject of women in sports has come up many times but an aspect that I think is neglected in this subject is the lack of female referees. I've been watching a lot of March Madness lately and this had me noticing the complete lack of female officials (not only in college basketball but all male sports, both collegiately and professionally). Women referees seem to only be officials for female sports, with the exception of soccer (the only sport where I have seen a woman ref a match played by men). This goes back to the notion that women "can't do" sports or are in some way inferior to men when it comes to sports. I just found it interesting that when watching male sports, nearly all the positions are filled by men.

I have noticed this too the past few days! But last night I was watching the Chicago Bulls game and they had female refs. Personally, I thought it was cool that women were being represented, but at the same time I also found it oDd because I have LITERALLY NEVER seen female refs before!!! It made me wonder if people take them as seriously as male refs...it would be cool to ask a female ref her perspective...
ReplyDeleteI have always thought, too! I've noticed that with college and professional sports there are barely any female refs but in high school, we had female refs for basketball. I never saw them doing a football game or umpiring a baseball game, though. I've seen them umpiring at softball games and that is still only occassionally. It's something that I have always found weird, and it seems as if there aren't female refs maybe because they aren't considered as athletic for the running they need to do. It would be cool to see more females, though.
